The Town Operations Center project is a multi-building campus to accommodate the Public Works Department, Department of Housing Maintenance, and Transportation Department for the Town of Chapel Hill. The campus consists of four major buildings and eight auxiliary buildings. Maintenance facilities include vehicle lifts and shop equipment for servicing city buses and municipal vehicles. The project is seeking a Gold level High Performance Guidelines certification. Some of the unique sustainable features included to achieve this rating are rain water collection tanks, photovoltaic panels, day lighting, recycled content material specifications, low-VOC finishes, and a geothermal well system that maintains the HVAC system’s water at a constant temperature in order to reduce the amount of energy needed to cool or heat the buildings.
